Lana Del Rey Goes Hollywood Film Noir in ‘West Coast’ Video
Lana Del Rey has released a melancholy new video for “West Coast,” evoking the style of old Hollywood film noir. The minimalist clip depicts Del Rey reveling at the beach with a young man and driving with an older man, intercut with scenes that look like they were shot on a low-quality camcorder. There’s a strong contrast at the end, with Del Rey shown in a splash of color, engulfed in flames.
Lana Del Rey Working with Dan Auerbach on New Album
Last month, Interscope—Del Rey’s record label—released a “Dan Auerbach Mix” of “West Coast,” which features a stronger, clearer emphasis on Del Rey’s vocals and has been designated as the radio edit of the song. She had previously announced that she was working with the Black Keys’ frontman on her new album, Ultraviolence.
In April, Del Rey unveiled the official audio for “West Coast.” The accompanying image — a looped, black-and-white clip of the singer embracing a leather jacket-clad man at the beach — was pulled from the full music video. Earlier this year, Del Rey posted the single art on Twitter and performed the song live at Coachella. She initially revealed her plans to release a new record at the premiere of her short film, Tropico.
A release date for Ultraviolence has yet to be announced.
