Starting off simple with an excellent aping of Derulo’s pop R&B vocals, Anthony Vincent wastes little time busting out excellent impressions from artists across the musical spectrum. Some blistering AC/DC gives way to the soulful grooves of Ray Charles, which leads to the Bee Gees before Vincent headbangs his way through some White Zombie vocals. And that’s just the first minute. After layering serious harmonies for the Beach Boys, breaking into Spanish as the Bronx-based bachata group Aventura and getting sultry and smooth as Barry White, Vincent closes out his rendition of “Talk Dirty to Me” with an epic, exhausting vocal run in the style of jazz great Cab Calloway.
A musician, voiceover artist and video editor, Vincent created his viral video of Perry’s “Dark Horse” during downtime from his day job and as a way to promote his production company Ten Second Songs, which creates custom songs for special occasions.
“I came up with the idea last November and wanted to do this with [Miley Cyrus’] ‘Wrecking Ball,’ but it was too late,” Vincent told Rolling Stone. “I wanted to pick the most random styles you could imagine. I listened to ‘Dark Horse’ and after I heard it, I immediately thought, ‘This is it. This is the one.’ And I got to work.”
The video picked up 1 million YouTube views in less than a week, and while he didn’t mind the attention, Vincent said the best part of the whole experience was seeing viewers discover new music through the clip: “I love that people are having conversations that are involving Frank Sinatra, Type O Negative and Tech N9ne at the same time. If I’m in any way responsible for having some 14-year-old girl Google ‘Type O Negative,’ that’s crazy.”
