White Charged With Assault
White Stripes singer Jack White was charged today with aggravated
assault for his December 13th fight with Von Bondies singer Jason
Stollsteimer. White faces up to one year in jail if convicted.
The two musicians, who had a falling out after White produced
the Von Bondies’ 2001 Lack of Communication album, were in
the audience at Detroit’s Majestic Theater Center when the
altercation occurred. According to Stollsteimer, White was upset
that he refused to speak with him and “proceeded to punch him on
the right eye approximately seven times.” White claimed that he
acted in self-defense after Stollsteimer pulled him to the
ground.
White sustained cuts on his left hand, while Stollsteimer
suffered a swollen right eye and a bloody nose.
“It seems that far too often celebrities think that the law does
not apply to them,” said Wayne County Prosecutor Mike Duggan,
criticizing White at a Monday press conference.
The White Stripes will next play on New Year’s Eve at Chicago’s
Aragon Ballroom, before they embark on a U.K. tour in January. The
band is nominated for three Grammy awards, Album of the Year and
Alternative Album of the Year for Elephant and Best Rock
Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal for the White-penned
“Seven Nation Army.” White makes his feature-film debut in Cold
Mountain, which opens on Christmas. He also wrote music for
the film.
