Interpol Split With Bassist Carlos Dengler
Last week Interpol revealed they’re prepping their upcoming fourth album. But in a fresh message to fans over the weekend on their official site, the New York rockers announced one of their most well-known members, bassist Carlos Dengler, has left the band and won’t be joining the group when they hit the road this summer. Dengler, who contributed to the recording of Interpol’s still-untitled fourth album, made the decision after the sessions wrapped. “He has decided to follow another path, and to pursue new goals,” Interpol write. “This separation is amicable, and we whole-heartedly wish him great happiness and success. We will remain, as always, deeply respectful fans of this blazingly talented individual.”
While Dengler, who is known professionally as Carlos D, hasn’t announced what projects he’ll tackle in the future, the bassist has shown some interest in film directing and acting in recent years. He’s written and scored arty short films like Golgotha and directed commercials for iPhone and Johnny Walker. (Dengler features much of his work on his official site.) As for who might replace Dengler, Interpol wrote, “We can tell you that we have some very exciting new recruits joining us on the road. So stay tuned — we will promptly be revealing the identities of these illustrious players.” Dengler has always been a key part of Interpol’s stage show, known for striking wide-legged poses while plucking out basslines as much as for his unique fashion sense, which has included custom (empty) gun holsters.
Interpol, who recently unleashed their new song “Lights” as a free download, also offered up some more details regarding their upcoming album. The LP was recorded at New York’s Electric Lady Studios and mixed by Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails). “The four of us poured our collective heart into this music and we are very proud and excited to share it. It’s a heavy record. But we’re feeling limber; and we’re going to carry it all around the world for you,” the band writes. Interpol will be among the opening acts for the second leg of U2’s 360° Tour in the U.S. and will also plot their own dates in support of their new album.
