Eminem Teams With 50 Cent, Gets Past “Punch Lines” on “Relapse 2 “
With Relapse 2 reportedly due out by year’s end, Eminem appeared on his Sirius radio station Shade 45 this weekend to talk about his new album, the second prong of a two-tier attack that launched with the release of Relapse earlier this year. But even though Em was on his home turf, he was still elusive about Relapse 2 and failed to divulge information like an estimated release date or potential singles.
Eminem did talk about one song that he and 50 Cent recorded together in Las Vegas. The pair recorded two tracks, one bound for Relapse 2 with the other headed to 50’s oft-delayed Before I Self-Destruct. According to Em, the song will find Em and Fiddy going back and forth at each other, which sort of sounds similar to Eminem and Dr. Dre’s “Guilty Conscience.” “We’ve kind of done it on other records, but not like to the extent on this one,” Em said.
While Dr. Dre production dominated Relapse, Eminem told Shade 45’s DJ Whoo Kid that the sequel will feature beats from other producers as well. “The way that it is going right now, Denaun [Mr. Porter] has two tracks on the album, and Just Blaze has four, possibly five,” Eminem said. Mr. Porter, or Kon Artis as he’s often called, is a member of Em’s D12 collective and has previously produced tracks like 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.” The two songs on Relapse 2 will be the first Porter-produced Eminem tracks since 1997’s The Slim Shady EP. Just Blaze has produced Jay-Z’s “Show Me What You Got” and T.I.’s “Live Your Life” among a handful more chart-toppers.
Eminem wouldn’t get into specifics whether the themes of Relapse — drug addiction and recovery, serial killing, celebrity bashing — will carry over onto 2. “I definitely feel like I’m in a different space right now. With the last record, I think a lot of it had to do with me getting sober, my eyes being open again. With Relapse, I wanted to prove myself that I could still do it. The zany, loony, ridiculous shit, so a lot of that album is rapid-fire punch lines,” Em said, adding, “Now I’m at a point where I’m blessed enough to be in a position where I don’t need to put out records, but I want to.”
Off the topic of Relapse 2, Slim Shady added that the upcoming DJ Hero game will feature a new song from “the Relapse batch,” that no tours here or abroad will happen until after the release of the new album and that, despite rumors, he and Lady Gaga are not collaborating.
