Courtney Back With “Mono”
Though most of Courtney Love’s press over the past two months
hasn’t had much to do with her music, this week she unveiled
“Mono,” the first single from her solo debut, America’s
Sweetheart.
Almost six years have passed since Love offered up any new
music, and she spent a substantial portion of the past two years
trying to get free from her contract with Universal. With a new
deal in place with Virgin, Love set about working on
Sweetheart earlier this year, recording in a thirteenth
century chateau in the South of France.
If “Mono” is any indication, Love has cut ties with some of the
Southern California pop that worked its way onto Hole‘s third and
final album, Celebrity Skin. Even though Love sings, “They
say rock is dead, and they’re probably right,” on “Mono,” she shows
a rougher sound that echoes 1994’s “Violet.”
After several delays (it was initially slated for release in the
fall) the rest of America’s Sweetheart, which will include
tracks Love co-wrote with former 4 Non Blondes frontwoman Linda
Perry, will be made available on February 10th.
As for Love’s non-musical drama, she was in a Los Angeles
courtroom last week and granted a deferment on two felony counts of
drug possession. She is scheduled to appear in court again on
January 27th.
