Beck, Conor to Honor Elliott
Beck, Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst, Beth Orton and Grandaddy have signed on for a memorial service/concert honoring Elliott Smith on November 3rd at the Henry Fonda Theater in Los Angeles.
Additional acts will join the lineup for the show, during which musicians will perform songs from Smith’s catalog. The event will also feature the premiere of a documentary film about Smith directed by Steve Hanft. All proceeds from the show will benefit the Elliott Smith Foundation for Abused Children.
Tickets for the all-ages event can be purchased for $20 through www.ticketweb.com.
Smith was found dead last Tuesday afternoon of what is believed to be a self-inflicted knife wound; he was thirty-four. Among the other tributes to Smith was a vigil held yesterday in New York City’s Tompkins Square Park. Moby and the Eels are among the artists who offered remembrances in Web posts.
“Elliott was very encouraging to me about my songs and that meant a lot to me,” Eels mainman E wrote. “He was a really sweet guy that wasn’t equipped to deal with some of the cards that life dealt him. I’ll always remember walking off stage one night after playing ‘It’s a Motherfucker’ and Elliott walking up behind me in the dark and patting me on the back. That’s how I will remember him.”
