Mortal Kombat Getting Ready To Annihilate America
After selling more than a million and a half copies of the
soundtrack to the 1995 movie Mortal Kombat and scoring a
Top 10 pop album, TVT Soundtrax is gearing up to
release Mortal Kombat: Annihilation — Original Motion Picture
Soundtrack on Oct. 28.
The first soundtrack helped launch the careers of such industrial and techno acts as Gravity Kills and Orbital. With sales of more than 250,000 copies of
the second album, Mortal Kombat: More Kombat, TVT helped
push Crystal Method into the forefront of mainstream music. Through the success of the Mortal Kombat series, a virtual Mortal Kombat sound has been created, involving such groups as Type-O-Negative, Josh Wink, Napalm Death, Fear Factory and Killing Joke.
Now, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation hopes to do the same
when the album ships gold later this month. The first single, KMFDM’s “Megalomaniac,” is currently spinning on rock radio around the country. But Annihilation should really take off with Megadeth’s “Almost Honest,” a song that got a special makeover by Danny Saber (U2,
Rolling Stones). “Danny gave the song an electronic
treatment, but a little on the industrial side,” said Jason
Consoli, a spokesman from TVT.
With songs from the likes of KMFDM, Future Sound of
London, Juno Reactor and Psykosonik, this
album should do well. “This soundtrack has the ingredients to far
surpass the first soundtrack,” Consoli said. “Plus, it’s a high
profile holiday season for Mortal Kombat — with the video game,
the movie and the soundtrack, it’s going to be everywhere.”
There are other songs worth mentioning on Annihilation.
The first, “Fire” by German group Scooter, is already an international dance hit that went to No. 1 in Germany. According to Consoli, it’s a high energy, rave track with vocals that will be a big song at dance clubs. The second song features Ben Grosse (of Filter fame) working his magic with Manbreak’s “Ready or Not.”
The movie hits screens Nov. 26, and MK4:
Mythology, the latest home video game in the Mortal Kombat
series, is available in stores now.
