Patrick Stump Plays solo, talks Fall Out Boy
It may seem strange at first to see Fall Out Boy‘s Patrick Stump take to the stage all by himself, armed with just an acoustic guitar. But in this solo performance for Rolling Stone at Lollapalooza, Stump demonstrates exactly why his band initially demanded that if he joined them, it was to be as a vocalist and not as a drummer. And it’s not because he can’t keep time. A native of Lollapalooza’s Chicago, Stump is totally convincing when he sings “This city is my city and I love it.”
For his gig with Fall Out Boy, Patrick Stump’s bandmate, Pete Wentz, often grabs the spotlight, even writing the lyrics that Stump gives voice to. That might explain why Stump has insisted on doing everything himself on his new solo venture, as he explains to Rolling Stone during this interview from backstage at Lollapalooza. “I played all the instruments myself,” he says, proudly. “I wrote all the songs; I produced everything.” But that’s not to say he’s moved on – while his solo release, Soul Punk, will drop this October, Stump says Fall Out Boy is “still my band.”
