Avril Sings “SpongeBob”
Avril Lavigne has joined the diverse lineup for the soundtrack to the The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie, due in theaters November 19th.
No stranger to cartoonland, former Mouseketeer Lavigne — who brings her Bonez Tour to the U.S. on October 25th — will record the SpongeBob theme song, which includes the lyrical gem, “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?” Other artists onboard for the animated feature include the Flaming Lips, Wilco, the Shins, Ween, Motorhead and the Dust Brothers.
The Lips contribute “Patrick and SpongeBob Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy.” “Musically, I think it sounds like something Parliament-Funkadelic would do if they had access to digital equipment,” frontman Wayne Coyne told Rolling Stone of the track. “Or maybe something that would have been on a kids’ show, like Schoolhouse Rock: simple and catchy.”
Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy was as motivated to participate in the soundtrack as a parent as he was as a musician. “How could I not write a song for this film?” said Tweedy, whose sons Sam, 4, and Spencer, 8, are big fans of the show. “It automatically makes me the coolest dad on the block.” Wilco wrote and recorded “Just a Kid” for the soundtrack, backed by the Blisters, Spencer’s band.
