Thurston Moore Joins Black Metal Supergroup Twilight
Sonic Youth frontman/guitarist Thurston Moore has joined black metal supergroup Twilight, the group’s singer and guitarist Blake Judd (also a member of Nachtmystium) told 1st Five in an interview.
Twilight – whose line-up now consists of Judd, Moore, the Atlas Moth’s Stavros Giannopoulos, producer Sanford Parker, Wrest (Jef Whitehead) from Leviathan and Imperial (Neil Jameson) from Krieg – hits the studio in August to start work on a new album set for release this fall on Century Media.
“I had Sonic Youth records when I was 12,” Judd said about the addition of Moore. “And to now know that, not only am I having a dialogue with this person about anything, but dude’s gonna join a band I started, and it’s like . . . whoah. Fucking amazing, amazing feeling.”
Sonic Youth is currently on hiatus following Moore’s separation from bassist/singer Kim Gordon last year after 27 years of marriage.
Judd noted that in addition to being a longtime Sonic Youth fan, he knew Moore through the band’s soundman Jeremy Lemos, who worked with Lichens’ Rob Lowe. Judd hopes Lowe will also contribute to the project.
“I’ve done so much shit, and worked with so many cool people, and I’ll get to work with Thurston,” Judd added. “You know Century Media could offer us $100,000 to make that Twilight record and say: ‘Blake, you get ninety percent of that money but Thurston Moore’s not gonna be on the record, or, you can be on it and we’ll give you 10 grand and that’s what you have to make it work.’ And I would, I would take the 10 grand and work with Thurston. That’s like how much I love Sonic Youth.”
This isn’t Moore’s only post-Sonic Youth project either: He’s currently fronting a new project called Chelsea Light Moving, while YOKOKIMTHURSTON, a project he and Gordon worked on with Yoko Ono, is scheduled for release September 25th.
Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo also recently noted that while the band may be on hiatus, they are currently prepping a bunch of archival releases, including a live album and tour film.
