At the Movies With Peter Travers: ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’
Fourth of July weekend is the centerpiece of summer movie season and there’s only one flick that’s on the mind of America: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third in the beloved vampires and werewolves drama. While nothing will prevent Twi-hards from lining up for hours to see Eclipse, Peter Travers has some bad news: The latest entry in the series is just as dull as its predecessors. Despite tabloid reports of a real-life romance between stars Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson, Travers doesn’t feel the heat between their two characters on-screen.
“I just wish everyone in this movie can transform into something interesting,” Travers says of the lack of character development over the series’ course. The latest chapter involves powerful “newborn” vampires who wreak havoc in the Pacific Northwest, forcing the Cullen family of vampires to team up with the werewolves to protect Bella Swan. There is one ray of hope in Eclipse: Dakota Fanning delivers a strong performance although, Travers says, “nothing in this movie is scary except the non-existent acting.”
