With their latest single, “Comedians,” Texas folk-punks the Riverboat Gamblers layer dense guitar riffs over pulsing, booming drums. Though the name suggests light-hearted humor, “Comedians” is a darker acknowledgment of how the funnies relate to difficult times.
“Over the last few years, I’ve spent a lot of time in the comedy scene and some of my best friends in the world are comedians. I see a through-line between certain kinds of music and comedy,” explains frontman Mike Wiebe. “You’re trying to express yourself on your own terms, but also hoping people relate and listen. It’s fundamentally at odds with itself. Many times you trudge on with little to no encouragement from the world or that one person.”
“Comedians” is from the Riverboat Gamblers’ upcoming album, The Wolf You Feed, which comes out May 22nd.
