Bizkit Show Off “Results”
Fred Durst debuted the entirety of Limp Bizkit’s long-delayed Results May Vary at a Saturday listening in London, where the band also played a free outdoor show to make up for missing festival appearance earlier this summer.
Results May Vary is a departure for the rap-rock group, featuring a layered brooding sound that leans towards Jane’s Addiction’s classic Nothing’s Shocking. Durst and new guitarist Mike Smith, hired this spring to replace Wes Borland, were on hand all the way through the sixteen-track album, due September 23rd, and stuck around to answer questions afterward. “You expected it to be heavy,” Durst said. “It’s more sad, more deep, drone-y.”
Admitting that the album “could make or ruin Limp Bizkit,” Durst explained that “the title is a disclaimer. If you’re expecting anything . . . if you don’t like it, there’s a warning on the cover.”
The album does, however, feature a number of straight-ahead heavy rock-rap songs — including “Let Me Down,” “Head For the Barracade” and “Gimme the Mic.” The loop-driven “Red Light — Green Light” features Snoop Dogg on vocals. “He sang it, then got fucked up and stoned,” Durst said, “and freestyled on it in one take.”
In addition to the originals, Results features a cover of the Who’s “Behind Blue Eyes.” “I identify with the lyrics,” Durst said, going on to relate it to his melancholy mood after his tabloid-documented fallout with Britney Spears. “I was in a weird state at the time.”
He also claims the band had forty songs going into the recording of the album and is already putting together the follow-up. “This is chapter one,” he said, “to prepare you for the next one. We’re going to work on it as soon as we can.”
Limp Bizkit then performed old and new songs during their free show in London’s Finsbury Park. During the set, Durst blasted Spears, labeling her as a “bitch” during the intro to “Break Stuff.” He went into the crowd to sing “Behind Blue Eyes,” and, as has become common practice, some fans threw plastic bottles at him. For one encore he played “Nevermind” on an electric guitar unaccompanied, and four ecstatic fans joined the band on stage during “My Way.”
