#RSFans at Kraftwerk: One Fan’s Photo Diary
I flew in from Charlotte to New York City. An animated GIF that I created won me tickets to the final performance of 'Kraftwerk Retrospective 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8' at the MoMA, a show that I never thought I would be able to attend. Apart from winning tickets to the sold-out performance, my GIF was also chosen to be projected on the VW fan mosaic digital billboard.

Arriving in Style
Arriving in New York, I was driven to the intersection of Houston Street and Bowery where my GIF would be displayed for everyone to see!
-
Look Up!
I stepped out of the car and could not believe what I saw. There, in the middle of Mahattan, my animated GIF was projected on a billboard for all to enjoy! This was a moment of absolute excitement.

My GIF
The GIF that I created started as a two- by three-inch GIF on my computer screen, and it turned into an epic 50 foot projection. The glasses pay homage to Kraftwerk’s use of 3-D imagery in their live performances.

Twins!
When I entered my GIF, I never thought I would find myself standing in New York, with the lights of the city reflected in my heart-shaped glasses, and my animation projected for all to see.

At the MoMA
During a private tour of the MoMA, my twin sister and I viewed the museum’s current exhibitions and permanent collections.
-
A Real Van Gogh
It was amazing to enjoy some of the most famous artwork in the world, all hours before we were to see Kraftwerk, one of the most influential bands to ever form.
-
Time to Get Ready
After the inspiring visit to the MoMA, we set off to get ready for the big show!
-
All of My Friends
My sister, my two best friends from college and I stood outside the MoMA before going into the show. We were able to enjoy Kraftwerk’s performance of Tour de France, their final show, in their mesmerizing retrospective at the museum.

Pre-Show Jitters
Entering the MoMA, you could feel the excitement in the audience. No one knew exactly what to expect, but all understood it was going to be a rare experience that few people can say they have witnessed.

Back to the Future
The performance was a hypnotizing sensory overload: the electronic sounds of Kraftwerk filled the room, neon flashing lights shot through the air, and 3-D images of the VW Beetle, vitamins, and robots came reaching out towards us.
-
Two in 3-D
Our 3-D glasses took us to a new dimension of live music.
-
Intimate Setting
The small room where the show took place created the sense of an intimate party that we were lucky to attend.
-
After Party!
The afterparty featured Nosaj Thing, Body Language, High Highs and a DJ set by Yeasayer. Kraftwerk fans filled the event, along with some others who simply wanted to take in all the excitement.

Our Turn
My sister and I gave our own personal performance, captured in front of a green screen and later turned into flip books. Our own “animated” party favor!
