The Game, Tina Turner Top Charts
The Game reclaimed the top spot on the charts, with sales of his debut The Documentary totaling 191,000 this past week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. But this week’s chart surprise is Tina Turner‘s greatest-hits compilation, All the Best, which debuted at Number Two (121,000). Featuring three new songs, the double-CD collection is the reclusive soul legend’s first release since 1996’s Wildest Dreams.
Green Day’s American Idiot climbed one spot to Number Three (113,000), while last week’s champ, Kenny Chesney’s Be As You Are (Songs From an Old Blue Chair), was knocked to Number Four, selling 200,000 less in its second week (109,000). Rounding out the Top Five is R&B singer and pianist John Legend’s debut, Get Lifted, which moved back up a place to Five, selling 93,000 copies.
The other big debuts were also best-of sets: Motley Crue’s Red, White and Crue moved 90,000 units to open at Number Six, and a collection of hits by this year’s Grammy nominees — creatively titled Grammy Nominees 2005 and featuring U2, Maroon 5 and Alicia Keys — moved 78,000 copies to debut at Number Eight.
Meanwhile, American Idol diva Fantasia continues her slow climb back up the charts, stepping up one spot to Number Twelve (62,000), as fellow alumnus Kelly Clarkson’s sophomore effort, Breakaway, dropped three out of the Top Ten to Eleven (65,000).
But real downward momentum this week was achieved by former country kid-prodigy LeAnn Rimes, whose all-grown-up comeback This Woman plummeted twenty-two spots out of the Top Five to Number Twenty-Five (41,000). And even more dramatic was the descent of indie darling Bright Eyes’ simultaneous releases: in their second week, the folksy I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning dropped from Number Ten to Thirty-Seven, selling a measly 30,000 copies; while the electronica-tinged Digital Ash in a Digital Urn plunged forty places, from Fifteen to Fifty-Five (21,000).
Next week expect Mississippi rockers 3 Doors Down to score big with their latest album, Seventeen Days. And do not underestimate the power of Cher’s Greatest Hits, Volume 1.
This week’s Top Ten: The Game’s The Documentary; Tina Turner’s All the Best; Green Day’s American Idiot; Kenny Chesney’s Be As You Are; John Legend’s Get Lifted; Motley Crue’s Red, White and Crue; Eminem’s Encore; Grammy Nominees 2005; Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz’ Crunk Juice; Usher’s Confessions.
