Reunited Guided by Voices Announce Fall Tour
For the first time since the band’s dissolution 2004, Guided by Voices will reunite this fall — and not just for a single show. Robert Pollard has revealed 15 Guided by Voices tour dates in addition to the band’s previously announced headlining slot at the Matador 21 Festival in Las Vegas at the beginning of October. The tour will kick off with a warm-up gig just a few days before the Matador fest, and will take the band around the country throughout the following month. The tour includes a performance on NBC’s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in early November.
The run of shows will reunite the band’s “classic” lineup, a reference to the frequently shifting cast of characters who supported Pollard during Guided by Voices’ Nineties heyday. The lineup consists of Tobin Sprout and Charles “Mitch” Mitchell on guitar, Greg Demos on bass and Kevin Fennel on drums. Pollard also revealed that the band will be focusing on songs from their 1992-1996 albums, which include Propeller, Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes and Under the Bushes, Under the Stars.
The tour comes as a surprise, given Pollard’s previous aversion to reunions. In a 2007 interview with Magnet, Pollard said, “If you’re gonna get the band back together, it should be to support a new record, not just to play the hits. That’s like doing the county-fair circuit. I don’t see Guided by Voices reforming.” There’s no word about any new music from GBV yet.
