Sunset Junction Festival Canceled
The Los Angeles Board of Public Works has denied the Sunset Junction Neighborhood Alliance operating permits for its 2011 street fair, less than a week before the three-decade-old event was set to kick off on Saturday. In a 3-1 vote, the board ruled against the festival's organizers, citing nearly $400,000 in unpaid fees for the 2010 and 2011 events.

The festival, which was set to feature sets by Butthole Surfers, the Melvins, Helmet, Art Brut, kd lang, Hanson, Bobby Womack and Peaches, may still go on if Sunset Junction founder Michael McKinley can raise an estimated $141,978.57 in fees owed for this year's fair. In that case, the board could reconvene on Wednesday to reassess its permit ruling.
