Pink Rocks on New CD
Pink has a surprise for anyone expecting only dance-floor pop on her next album. On Missundaztood, due November 20th, urban rhythms take a back seat to Pink’s dramatic and unexpected shift towards rock.
“I’m nervous,” says Pink. “I feel like I’m about to stand naked in front of an auditorium of people and they get to decide whether they like my blemishes.”
Pink (born Alecia Moore) insists the album is a logical progression from her younger days singing both gospel and punk rock in Philadelphia. “I’m old school,” she says. “I love Janis Joplin, I love Billy Joel, I love Jimi Hendrix. I love older music because it’s all live.”
Joining her on the new album is Linda Perry, former leader of Nineties rock act 4 Non Blondes. Perry produced nine of the album’s thirteen tracks, wrote two of the songs and co-authored seven more with Pink. She also collaborated with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler on the song “Misery.”
The first single is “Get the Party Started,” with funk rhythms co-produced with Damon Elliott (Destiny’s Child, Mya). But more representative is “My Vietnam,” a regretful rock ballad set against Perry’s acoustic guitar. “It’s a ballsy move on her part,” says Perry of Pink’s foray into rock. “What sells it is her voice and her conviction.”
Pink adds, “The last six months of my life has been the dream I always wanted. So if I have to get stones thrown at me because of it, it’s worth it.”
