Steven Van Zandt Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Reunite the Rascals
Steven Van Zandt has launched a Kickstarter campaign to reunite pioneering soul group the Rascals for a batch of reunion shows. The “Once Upon A Dream” shows are set for December 13th, 14th and 15th in the Capital Theatre in Port Chester, New York, and will feature the group’s original lineup of Felix Cavaliere, Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati and Dino Danelli. The shows will be the reunited Rascals’ first public performances in more than 40 years.
The gigs aren’t just simple reunion shows, though: Each performance will be augmented with narration, pre-filmed acted scenes and old footage of the band. Van Zandt and lighting veteran Marc Brickman will produce and direct the performances.
“The show will be an uplifting inspiration for you fans that have been waiting all these years, praying for a Rascals comeback, and those of you who are younger will get a real taste of the Sixties you missed the first time around. Me and Marc have invested our time, money and blood these last few years for this idea and now we need you to bring it home,” writes Van Zandt. “Not one dollar that is contributed will go into anyone’s pocket, or be commissioned in any way, every dollar will go into the production making it as good as it can be, as great as the Rascals deserve . . . So that’s it. The Rascals are coming back . . . The production will be as big as you make it.”
The Rascals started in the mid-Sixties as the Young Rascals, releasing three albums before changing their name. They released multiple hit singles, including Number One songs including “Good Lovin’,” “Groovin'” and “People Got to Be Free” before disbanding in 1972.
