New York City-based dance rockers Turing Machine are set to release their first studio album in eight years, What Is the Meaning of What. The group started the recording in 2008, but put things on hold when drummer Jerry Fuchs died suddenly and tragically after falling down an elevator shaft in 2009. His drumming on What Is the Meaning of What represents his last recordings, and the record was finished with the help of LCD Soundsystem’s Pat Mahoney, Disappears’ Brian Case and other artists from DFA.
Those drums hit with acute accuracy on the driving opener “Yeah, C’mon!” while thumping playfully on “If It’s Gone (It’s On).” Elsewhere, “Lazy Afternoon of the Jaguar” places flitting synths on top of an infectious disco groove, and the closer “Bovina 2/23/08” features that same taut dance-punk feel but with psychedelic guitars that turn quite heavy towards the end. What Is the Meaning of What drops May 8th on Temporary Residence, but you can listen to it in full now.
