Kiev, based out of Orange County, Calif., have had a busy year. On top of steadily touring, they were named Best Indie Band at the OC Music Awards and are finding time to record their upcoming full-length debut, set for release in 2012.
Lead singer and guitarist Bobby Brinkerhoff explains that their track “3rnd” contains many different sounds in order to tell a dynamic story. “‘3rnd’ is a tune about frustration with form and structure and the disconnect between the internal and external experience,” Brinkerhoff says. “Listeners will hear everything from wind-up toys and grumbling old architects to flocks of heinous sounding birds and sleazy street merchants, and all these elements play a specific role in the story.”
Kiev used traditional pop music to structure their Inception-like story within a song. “We figured what better way to tell a story about form than within the most common of forms: the time-tested, crowd-pleasing pop tune structure,” Brinkerhoff says. “I think it was our humble attempt to get all Charlie Kaufman with our songwriting: writing a song about writing the song while writing the song.”
Brinkerhoff even cites pop music traditions as a major factor of naming the track. “Radio pop tunes always seem to be the third song on an album, and ‘3rnd’ is the second song on our EP, so we smashed 2nd into 3rd and got 3rnd,” he says.
