Indie duo Grand Duchy, which consists of Pixies frontman Frank Black and his wife Violet Clark, will release the follow-up to 2008’s full-length Petits Fours on April 10th. Clark says that the new record, Let The People Speak, “is meant to be a meandering journey in which the listener is asked to ponder themes relating to art, fame, power/powerlessness, pain, sex and glamor.”
Violet Clark says Grand Duchy was attempting to forge a connection to Andy Warhol, who was a significant inspiration behind Let The People Speak. “These themes were explored, in part, as a way to connect our work to that of the great creator Andy Warhol, for whom such human experiences were of a deeply compelling and curious nature,” she says.
The duo’s lead single, the energetic, bass-heavy “Silver Boys” perhaps contains the album’s most pointed Andy Warhol references. “‘Silver Boys’ is the most explicit track on the album to wallow in our nostalgia for the days of Warhol’s Factory,” Clark says. “What an oddly unique lifestyle his companionship must have afforded. Oh, to have been there, swirling desperately around Andy like a tiny silver moon orbiting around the Sun.”
