Trent Reznor Scores David Fincher’s Facebook Movie
Trent Reznor promised fans he’d keep making music despite retiring Nine Inch Nails from the road, and so far he’s delivered: his new band with wife Mariqueen Maandig, How to Destroy Angels, released a free EP earlier this summer, and now Reznor has revealed he’s recording the score for the upcoming David Fincher-directed Facebook film The Social Network with frequent collaborator Atticus Ross. “I’ve always loved David’s work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story,” Reznor writes on his official website. “When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned.”

Reznor has produced a pair of soundtracks in the past, 1994’s Natural Born Killers for Oliver Stone and 1997’s Lost Highway for David Lynch, but The Social Network marks the first time the NIN leader has recorded a full score for a film. (The Fincher collaboration also continues Reznor’s streak of working with Oscar-nominated film directors.) In May, Reznor unveiled his end-credits music for the Japanese film Tetsuo: The Bullet Man , which will premiere in the U.S. at this year’s Comic-Con.
“The level of excellence that David operates on is inspiring and the entire process has been challenging and truly enjoyable,” Reznor writes. “As Atticus and I near the end of the scoring process, we’re looking forward to the next phase — distilling the large amount of music we’ve written for this down to a satisfying record (or two).” Reznor reports that the album should be available several weeks before the movie’s October 1st opening date. The film’s premiere also coincides with approximately when Reznor and Maandig are expecting their first child, the OC Weekly reports. Reznor has previously stated that How to Destroy Angels were planning a full-length album and tour for 2011 because “we’re all having babies this year.”
Though a film about a social network starring Justin Timberlake may seem like light fare for the NIN frontman, Reznor promises the film delivers: “It’s really fucking good. And dark!”
