The Flaming Lips Plan ‘Yoshimi’ Musical
The Flaming Lips have announced plans for a psychedelic stage musical loosely based on their 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. According to frontman Wayne Coyne, the group are collaborating with the co-creator of the stage version of the Who‘s Tommy to create something “hokey and wonderful and poignant and powerful.”

The musical will feature around 30 songs from the Lips’ catalog, including most of the Yoshimi record as well as numbers from The Soft Bulletin and At War With the Mystics. Though this will be the group’s first venture into musical theater, they have some experience with working their music into a dramatic narrative. In 2008, the Flaming Lips released Christmas On Mars, a movie featuring their music starring the band members and their friends.
