Nicki Minaj Skips Hot 97 Summer Jam Performance
Nicki Minaj was a no-show for her Hot 97 Summer Jam set in New Jersey yesterday, following a dis from Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg. While introducing upcoming Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar, Rosenberg said, “We’re all about that real hip-hop, not ‘Starships,'” referring to Minaj’s current pop-oriented single. Minaj’s YMCMB label leader Lil Wayne quickly took to Twitter to say, “Young Money ain’t doing summer jam.” Minaj soon followed on her Twitter, saying, “Wow. U niggaz just fucked up history. But the President has spoken. #YMCMB,” and “I go above and beyond for my fans. But won’t ever go against Wayne’s word. What he says, goes.”
Minaj was set to perform with Nas and Lauryn Hill, and the two stars took the stage despite Minaj’s absence, with Hill joining Nas on “If I Ruled the World.” YMCMB label artist Tyga performed earlier in the day, before the spat.
Once Minaj withdrew, legendary Hot 97 DJ Funkmaster Flex said, “We don’t fuck with commercial artists no more,” adding, “We don’t give a shit if you commercial or pop and you afraid to touch down in Jersey.” Rosenberg wrote on his own Twitter, “Tonight just got interesting g.”
