While working on their new record, The Glorious Dead (out August 21st on Counter Records/Ninja Tune), English rockers the Heavy ventured across the pond to Columbus, Georgia, seeking some Southern Gothic inspiration. The trip was taken on the advice of the group’s bus driver, Sam Phillips, who helped the band get in touch with church-trained singers and musicians. The experience left an audible mark on the group’s new single, “What Makes a Good Man?”
“We had the beat and the chorus for ‘Good Man,’ and when [singer/keyboardist] Lloyd [Buchanan] started jamming on the B3 and singing on it, I was like, ‘This is going to be insane,'” recalls frontman Kelvin Swaby. “The gospel singers started doing the chorus – as if they already knew the song, they made it sound like the Supremes or Ronettes. It was an incredible feeling.”
