The Julie Ruin Channel Super 8 Nostalgia in ‘Goodnight, Goodbye’ Clip
The Julie Ruin, fronted by riot grrrl icon Kathleen Hanna (formerly of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre), have released a grainy new video for “Goodnight, Goodbye,” an album track from their 2013 debut, Run Fast. The clip, shot in Olympia, Washington, chronicles the band’s touring life on charmingly out-of-focus Super 8 film.
Kathleen Hanna Moves Forward With the Julie Ruin
“Drove all night through the dirty, melted snow / didn’t care if we ever got played on the radio,” sings Hanna on the track, her nasal chirp springing off distorted power chords and a bouncy synthesizer lead. “Held ourselves together with tape and twine / weilded confidence like it was a shiny knife.” Throughout the track, Hanna reflects on her punk past, with the video’s shakiness only adding to the charm. It’s like watching a warped home video in a dingy nightclub.
The band have also announced a new tour with Screaming Females, kicking off April 1st in Easthampton, Massachusetts. After playing nine North American dates, they’ll venture to Europe for a round of dates in May, before Hanna curates the Sled Island Music and Arts Festival in Calgary this June.
