Beatles, Eminem, U2 Set for Philippines Benefit Album
Dozens of musical artists, including the Beatles, Eminem and U2, have come together to donate songs to a compilation benefiting those affected by Supertyphoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The album, Songs for the Philippines, contains 39 tracks and is available now on iTunes. The artists, labels and managers all agreed to donate proceeds from the release to the Philippine Red Cross. The comp is also streaming as an iTunes Radio “First Play” release, for which all streaming proceeds also benefit relief efforts in the Philippines.
In recent weeks, other artists have shown their support for the Philippines, which suffered over 5,000 casualties as a result of the storm, according to the BBC. The members of Journey, whose frontman hails from Manila, donated $350,000 to the United Nations World Food Programme. It was estimated that the money would provide for 1.4 million meals for those affected by the storm. In New York City, former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne held a benefit concert that featured the cast of Here Lies Love, the concept album and stage musical he wrote with Fatboy Slim that chronicled the life of the country’s former first lady, Imelda Marcos.
