Katy Perry Braves Fire and Ice in ‘Unconditionally’
There’s plenty happening in Katy Perry‘s new video for “Unconditionally”: she crouches in the snow, releases a giant owl, stands alone in the center of a ring of dancing couples in archaic dress and gets hit from behind by a vintage car that shatters as if it were made of ice. Yet through it all, she stays on message: she will love you (or someone) unconditionally.

The flaming bed in one scene probably sums the whole thing up, though Perry explained the look of the clip in an interview with MTV. “The music video is kind of inspired by a couple different movies, like Dangerous Liaisons and Anna Karenina, and it doesn’t have a complete narrative, because I do that all the time,” Perry says. Instead, she wanted to feature a variety of looks she liked and what she says are “heavy metaphors,” like getting hit by a car. “It’s kind of representational of when love hits you,” she said.
“Unconditionally” is on Perry’s new album Prism, which debuted at Number One on the Billboard 200 albums chart when it came out last month. The album, Perry’s fourth, is her follow-up to 2010’s Teenage Dream.
