D’Angelo to Perform at Essence Music Festival
R&B singer D’Angelo will perform in the United States for the first time in 10 years on the opening night of this year’s Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, according to CBS.
The festival runs from July 6th to July 8th and will also feature performances from Aretha Franklin, Trey Songz and many more.
Earlier this year D’Angelo returned to the stage with a European tour, where he tried out new material for a record rumored to be coming out soon. (He also did a pretty good cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.”)
After the massive critical and commercial success of his 2000 record Voodoo, which went platinum and won two Grammys, including Best R&B album, D’Angelo turned away from the music world, but stayed in the spotlight with several run-ins with the law.
Last March, D’Angelo pleaded guilty to soliciting a prostitute after he paid an undercover cop, posing as a prostitute, $40. Prior to that, in 2002, D’Angelo was charged with assault after he allegedly verbally and physically attacked a woman at a gas station; and in 2005, the singer was charged with drunk driving and posession of marijuana and a controlled substanced (believed to be cocaine).
