Off the Cuff: Jack Black on ‘Bernie,’ Tenacious D and the Death of Rock
Comedy superstar Jack Black stopped by Peter Travers’ office at Rolling Stone headquarters to chat about his dramatic turn as a funeral director in the indie movie Bernie, as well as his latest album as half of the rock duo Tenacious D. Black also picked one of his earlier movies to toss in the Scum Bucket, and explained why he proclaimed “Rock is Dead” on Tenacious D’s new record. “When you think about rock, at its origin, you think of the Beatles and millions of kids screaming as loud as they can and running as fast as they can toward the Beatles,” says Black. “There is no one that is that kind of lightning rod. I contend that the last band to really have that kind of power was Nirvana.”
