The next installment of the Bourne franchise has a release date. The film will be directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious).
Peter Travers: ‘The Bourne Legacy’ Doesn’t Feel Right Without Matt Damon
This is Lin’s first time helming a Bourne film, but he has plenty of experience in the action genre. Lin directed the last four titles of the Fast & Furious series, including this year’s Fast & Furious 6. However, he has not been involved in the seventh installment, which is now in flux after the tragic death of star Paul Walker last weekend.
Lin will produce the still-untitled Bourne project for Perfect Storm Entertainment, along with Captivate’s Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith and returning producer Frank Marshall (who worked on 2012’s The Bourne Legacy, the series’ fourth installment). Further details of the cast and crew (including the project’s writer) are currently unknown.
The first three Bourne films, which starred Matt Damon, enjoyed strong critical reception. Legacy (which introduced Renner) had a strong box office showing, including a $40.3 million opening weekend, but reviews weren’t as kind. Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers called it “a commercial venture,” adding that it “(didn’t) feel right without Matt Damon.”
