The film, which is set for release on December 25th, is set in a mythical version of Japan. It follows a slave (played by Reeves) as he joins a band of 47 samurai in a plot for redemption. “Those who enslaved you killed our leader and banished us from our land,” says a mysterious voice in the trailer. “Join us and we will have our revenge.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film’s production has been a roller-coaster ride from the start. It began under the helm of young Carl Rinsch, a commercial director who was set to work on the 2012 sci-fi film Prometheus before he was replaced by Ridley Scott; under his guidance, 47 Ronin‘s budget swelled to $200 million as Universal demanded reshoots of a battle sequence toward the end of the film. Under close supervision, Rinsch was also required to shoot additional material in order to boost Reeves’ romantic subplot. Those problems seem resolved, though, just in time for Christmas.
