1960s Style, Trends Revisited: British Invasion, Hippies, Woodstock
When people think of 1960s fashion, they often envision Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, but that is more “personal style,” according to designer Jayne Min. “What was happening in fashion was oftentimes very different. … Like mod sensibility… bell bottoms and frayed vests with fringe – hippie stuff.”
In the first episode of our six-episode documentary series connecting music and fashion, we look at how rock & roll, fluid female sexuality, psychedelics and progressive social ideals shaped an era.
“If you were to just look at photos of the Beatles – just look at Ringo – and you can see so much of the story of culture in the 1960s,” says Rolling Stone contributing editor Joe Levy. “The impulse is, I want to cross boundaries, I should look like a boundary-crosser.”
