Watch Folk Supergroup I’m With Her Perform New Song ‘Little Lies’
It’s been a hot minute since we’ve heard from I’m With Her, the folk supergroup featuring outstanding multi-instrumentalists Sarah Jarosz, Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek) and Aoife O’Donovan. With each member busy pushing their own solo records, the trio – which formed by way of an impromptu jam at the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival – spent 2016 on the back burner. But that changes with the release of a new EP titled Little Lies, a follow-up to the 2015 cover of John Hiatt’s “Crossing Muddy Waters.” Check out the video for the title track, out last week, above.
The no-frills clip itself, a lyric video that captures trio singing in the studio, lets the uplifting-yet-melancholy tune do the talking.
“I’m gonna hold my cards close / Cover my scars and mostly tell you little lies / I hope you never know this kind of loneliness that’s eating me alive,” O’Donovan sings over delicately plucked acoustic guitars before Jarosz and Watkins chime in with loneliness-quelling harmonies, singing “If I pretend I never cried / And my daddy raised me right that I pick myself up when I fall / That I don’t need a helping hand / On my own two feet I stand will you come running when I call?”
In a group whose “Who’s on First”-evoking name suggests a supporting cast and no designated frontwoman, it’s perhaps a question that answers itself.
The trio kicks off a two-week tour with the Punch Brothers July 29th in Portland, Maine.
