Vince Gill: My Five Favorite Eagles Songs
This weekend, Vince Gill made the first of two appearances with the Eagles, filling in for the late Glenn Frey – along with Frey’s son Deacon – at the Classic West concert in Los Angeles. He’ll do it all over again on July 29th for the Classic East concert at Citi Field in New York City. We asked Gill, a longtime fan of the band, to pick his five favorite Eagles songs.
-
“Desperado”
It’s the first song that Glenn and Don [Henley] wrote together, which is pretty astounding. Don’s voice is so distinctive; it’s not unlike hearing Ray Charles.
-
“Peaceful Easy Feeling”
This is so country. You could hear a guitar solo
like that on a Merle Haggard record or an Emmylou Harris record. -
“I Can’t Tell You Why”
It escapes me why Timothy B. Schmit never sang
more. Glenn composed the solo. It’s one of the most musical expressions I’ve
ever heard. -
“Rocky Mountain Way”
It’s not an Eagles song, but they do it every
night. In all my years in music I’ve never seen someone more adored by the
crowd than Joe Walsh. -
“Ol’ 55”
Written by Tom Waits, it feels like the breezy
life in California. It’s a sentimental favorite. I may put a note in the hopper
asking if I can sing it.
