See Luke Bryan’s Rugged ‘Hooked on It’ on ‘Seth Meyers’
In advance of the March 11th reboot of American Idol, new judge Luke Bryan made an appearance on Tuesday’s episode of Late Night With Seth Meyers to plug the upcoming show and perform his song “Hooked on It.”
A Southern-rock-flavored tune that deals in the formative experiences for small-town people, “Hooked on It” appears on Bryan’s 2017 album What Makes You Country. The lyrics recount his first time to reel something in on a fishing trip – which inspires the title – hearing Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee” and stepping on the white sands of the Gulf Coast. On Meyers’ stage, Bryan and band emphasize the song’s harder-edged aspects, with an insistent kick drum and some effects-laden guitar fireworks.
The “Most People Are Good” singer also sat for an interview with Meyers to talk about his inclusion on the Idol reboot, where he will join fellow judges Lionel Richie and Katy Perry. The two discussed Bryan’s judging style and the anxiety of having to eliminate competitors, while Meyers also wondered if Bryan had sought advice from Blake Shelton, now in his 14th season as a coach on NBC’s The Voice.
“He was really excited for me,” says Bryan, who also tossed in a couple solid jokes about Shelton’s status as People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” “In the country world – I love touring. I love getting on the bus, rolling down the road, hanging with my buds, going and playing shows. Blake was excited because he wanted to see my reaction to this whole other segment. TV has its own little lane.”
Once the season of Idol concludes, Bryan will resume his headlining What Makes You Country Tour, which includes a series of stadium shows with Sam Hunt, Jon Pardi, Morgan Wallen and Carly Pearce. Among those blockbuster dates is the first-ever country show to take place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, scheduled for July 28th.
