Watch Andy Serkis Read Trump Tweets as ‘Lord of the Rings” Gollum
Andy Serkis offered a menacing edge to President Trump‘s tweets on Tuesday’s Late Show, recreating two presidential messages with the voice and mannerisms of his most famous film character, Lord of the Rings‘ slimy Gollum.
Though Serkis was promoting his role in War for the Planet of the Apes, Colbert, a J.R.R. Tolkien super-fan, couldn’t resist asking the actor to revisit the earlier motion-capture role.
Serkis got into the Gollum spirit by abruptly jumping on his chair and adopting a high, quivering tone. He first dusted off a June tweet that reads like a Greatest Hits of Trump-isms: “The Fake News Media has never been so wrong or so dirty. Purposely incorrect stories and phony sources to meet their agenda of hate. Sad!”
For the grand finale, he added a Tolkien twist to Trump’s infamous “covfefe” tweet, interjecting, “Wait, what’s covfefe, precious?”
Elsewhere in the interview, Serkis discussed the evolution of his character Caesar, the genetically enhanced ape from War for the Planet of the Apes, and presented a video highlighting the motion-capture process.
