See Tim McGraw, Charlie Worsham Cover Glen Campbell’s ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’
Charlie Worsham feels right at home with the big boys. His new LP, Beginning of Things, while not a commercial smash, has been a critical hit, including being chosen as one of Rolling Stone Country‘s best albums of the year so far. The Nashville singer also recently played a handful of shows in Toronto as a part of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s Soul2Soul Tour, and while he was there Worsham and McGraw tackled a backstage cover of Glen Campbell’s classic “Rhinestone Cowboy.”
McGraw has been making a habit of cutting impromptu recordings with his openers on the Soul2Soul Tour since it kicked off in April, including performances with Midland and the Shadowboxers. As McGraw unpacks his guitar at the beginning of the video, Worshman makes a couple song suggestions, including Ronnie Milsap’s “Daydreams About Night Things,” which makes for a tantalizing what-could-have-been scenario.
As it is, the pair nail a stripped-down take on “Rhinestone Cowboy,” one of Campbell’s most iconic songs, a choice made all the more timely by the recent release of the Country Music Hall of Famer’s farewell album, Adiós. McGraw, who takes the first verse before handing off vocal duties to Worsham, sings the praises of his younger counterpart afterwards. “If I could sing like that, I’d have a career,” McGraw says.
Worsham, who released Beginning of Things on Warner Bros. in April, performs at the Sundance Bluebird Cafe Concert Series tonight in Sundance, Utah, with a pair of shows booked later this month at the Grand Ole Opry on July 21st and 22nd. McGraw and Hill, meanwhile, are in Boston the next two nights to play TD Garden with Lori McKenna.
