Danielle Bradbery Talks Return to Country, New Song ‘Sway’
Two years after releasing the single “Friend Zone,” Danielle Bradbery has returned with a fresh new sound. The soon-to-be 21-year-old country singer says she’s evolved in just those few years time – and has changed quite a bit since winning Season Four of The Voice in 2013 at 17.
“It feels amazing to be back. It’s been about three or four years and I’m very thankful for that length of time, because even in a year I think everybody changes so much,” Bradbery tells Rolling Stone Country. “Being 16, 17, you really don’t know who you are quite yet.”
To announce her return, the Texas native has released the everybody-struggles anthem “Sway.” Pushing Bradbery’s smooth vocals to the fore, the song, a mix of danceable R&B, pop and country, strips away any bells and whistles to create a breezy summertime jam.
“I think it’s so fun, and the fans absolutely love it, just because they feel like you’re on the same page as them,” she says. “We were just like, ‘Let’s not think about it too hard, and let’s write ‘Sway.'”
Bradbery co-wrote the song, helping light a creative fire in the young writer. Now, she says, she’s caught the bug: “Any writing session I get into, I learn something new.”
