John Oliver Blasts ‘F–king Egomaniac’ Trump for Leaving Paris Climate Accord
On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver fact-checked “fucking egomaniac” President Trump‘s inaccurate and misleading statements about the Paris Climate Accord. The host broke down the Commander-in-Chief’s White House Rose Garden speech, point-by-point, while attempting to suppress his rage.
In his speech, Trump claimed that the celebration surrounding the signing of the agreement – which involved 195 nations – was fueled by placing the U.S. at a “very, very big economic disadvantage.”
“What are you talking about?” Oliver fumed. “They were happy because they secured a landmark victory for the future of the planet, you fucking egomaniac! The whole world is not secretly conspiring against the United States.”
The comedian blasted Trump’s argument that the Accord would allow other nations to expand coal production while prohibiting the U.S. from doing so. “For the record, the agreement doesn’t actually ban America from building coal plants. It doesn’t even contain the word ‘coal.’ Each country sets its own goals that it can meet however it wants, so that is wrong. It’s just wrong.”
Trump – who tweeted in 2012 that climate change was “created by and for the Chinese” – rationalized that pulling out of the climate deal would help American workers. Oliver showed that the move damaged America’s global reputation and hurt the potential for job creation through expansion into renewable energy.
With the U.S. out, China will, instead, emerge as a world leader in climate change progress, Oliver points out. In January, the country canceled 103 coal-fired power plants and announced plans to spend over $361 billion in renewable energy by 2020, creating at least 13 million new jobs.
“You know what? In a way, Trump is fulfilling his campaign promise,” Oliver cracked. “He is creating millions of new jobs – he’s just doing it for the wrong fucking country.”
