See Harry Styles’ Unique Spin on Kanye West’s ‘Ultralight Beam’
Harry Styles staged a surprise gig at London’s Garage Saturday night – his first full concert as a solo artist – with the singer performing 10 songs of his debut LP as well as One Direction‘s “Stockholm Syndrome” and a cover of Kanye West‘s “Ultralight Beam.”
For the Life of Pablo opener, Styles stripped away the gospel elements of the track, giving it a moody Purple Rain makeover that radically transformed the West song into its own distinct rendition.
The Garage concert also featured the live debut of Harry Styles songs “Meet Me in the Hallway,” “Woman,” “Only Angel,” “From the Dining Table” and “Kiwi.”
On Monday, Styles will begin a weeklong residence as musical guest on James Corden’s Late Late Show. Styles’ world tour in support of his new album begins September 19th in San Francisco.
In his Rolling Stone cover story, Styles talked about his anxiety as he approached a solo career.
“I mean, I’ve never done this before,” he said. “I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing. I’m happy I found this band and these musicians, where you can be vulnerable enough to put yourself out there. I’m still learning … but it’s my favorite lesson.”
