Apple TV to Host Amazon’s Prime Video App
Apple is expected to announce that Amazon‘s Prime video app will be available on Apple TV, BuzzFeed reports. Apple will reportedly announce the addition during the keynote address at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference June 5th in San Jose, California.
The Prime video app will reportedly be available starting this summer, though an exact release date was not given and could change. Amazon had previously declined to offer a Prime app on Apple TV despite Apple’s “all are welcome” policy when it launched its TV App Store in 2015.
The deal also means that Amazon will start selling the Apple TV set-top box again, though an exact date for that has yet to be announced. The digital retailer stopped selling Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast in 2015 as it began pushing its own Fire TV Stick. Amazon even banned third-party retailers from hocking its competitors’ products, claiming they caused “customer confusion” since neither supported Prime video at the time.
The addition of Prime video to Apple TV brings Amazon’s impressive, and growing, library of original series, such as Transparent, The Man In the High Castle and Mozart In the Jungle. The tech giant’s production wing, Amazon Studios, has also made moves into the film world, becoming the first streaming media service to earn a Best Picture Oscar nomination for Manchester By the Sea. Among its many current and upcoming projects, Amazon Studios recently teamed with Martin Scorsese for a Grateful Dead documentary and the Roots for two new kids shows. A representative for Apple declined to comment on Buzzfeed’s report when contacted by Rolling Stone.
