Watch Grisly First Trailer for ‘Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders’
NBC has unveiled the grisly first trailer for Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders, a true crime series about the Menendez brothers’ trial following the murder of their parents in August 1989.
The Sopranos‘ Edie Falco stars in the Dick Wolf-produced series as Leslie Abramson, the lawyer tasked with defending Erik and Lyle Menendez at the tabloid-dominating trial.
The blood-soaked trailer also promises “the true story will finally be told” regarding why the wealthy siblings killed their parents with a shotgun at their Beverly Hills home, with Abramson suggesting it was the boys’ upbringing that turned them into monsters.
“These boys were just little children being molded,” Falco’s character says in voiceover in the trailer. “When you terrorize people precisely as you would expect them to. What these boys did is not the issue. It’s why they did it.”
The newest Law & Order spinoff will airs Thursdays this fall on NBC.
Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders is the latest in a string of reenacted true crime series based on some of the most infamous murders in recent decades: American Crime Story‘s Emmy-winning first season focused on The People vs. O.J. Simpson, while the third season of the anthology series revolves around the murder of Gianni Versace.
The unsolved death of JonBenet Ramsey in 1996 was also breathlessly reexamined in made-for-TV movies and documentaries for its 20th anniversary. A Lifetime movie about the Menendez brothers, starring Courtney Love as their mother “Kitty,” is also in the works.
