‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Beauty & the Beast’ Win Big at 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards
Netflix supernatural smash Stranger Things, the live-action Beauty and the Beast remake and Jordan Peele’s subversive horror-comedy Get Out dominated the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, hosted by Workaholics star Adam Devine.
Emma Watson took home Best Actor in a Movie for her role as Beauty‘s live-action Disney princess, and in her acceptance speech, she praised the show for not categorizing performers by gender. “The first acting award in history that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience,” Watson said. “Acting is about the ability to put yourself into someone else’s shoes – and that doesn’t have to be separated into two different categories.”
Beauty and the Beast earned five nominations, also including Best Musical Moment (for Ariana Grande and John Legend’s take on the title theme), Best Duo (Josh Gad and Luke Evans), Best Kiss (Emma Watson and Dan Stevens) and Best Movie of the Year, the latter of which it also won.
Stranger Things, which earned four nods, closed MTV’s first-ever dual Movie/TV ceremony with a celebratory moment, as the show’s beaming young cast accepted Show of the Year. But Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) marked one of the evening’s most emotional spots in her tearful Best Actor in a Show speech. “I want to thank the Duffer Brothers because they’ve created a badass, female, iconic character that I’ve got the honor to play,” said Brown, who was also nominated for Best Hero.
With seven nominations, Get Out was the ceremony’s most high-profile project. Though it lost Movie of the Year to Beauty and the Beast, Daniel Kaluuya took home the Next Generation award for his starring role in the social-satire/horror movie and Lil Rel Howery earned Best Comedic Performance. It was also nominated for Best Actor in a Movie (Kaluuya), Best Villain (Allison Williams), Best Duo (Kaluuya and Howery) and Best Fight Against the System.
