Shania Twain to Join ‘The Voice’ as Key Adviser
Season 12 of NBC’s The Voice has yielded its share of memorable moments from guest mentors, whether it was Luke Bryan accidentally saying “99 times out of 10” or the contestants’ jaws dropping when Gwen Stefani brought Céline Dion in for help. As the show heads into the live performances, Grammy-award winning performer Shania Twain is set to join in the role of key adviser. Unlike guest mentors – this season included DJ Khaled and John Legend, along with Bryan and Dion – Twain will be providing support to the 12 remaining contestants, instead of working with individual teams. Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and the pair of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have all served in the role in past seasons.
Though Twain made a live comeback with her headlining Rock This Country Tour in 2015 and has been a regular presence at country events – she won CMT’s Artist of a Lifetime honor in 2016 – she hasn’t released any new music since the 2011 single “Today Is Your Day.” Her most recent full-length album, Up!, came out in 2002. She’s reportedly working on a new album, but part of the delay has been due to her diagnosis with the vocal cord disorder dysphonia.
“I’m a different singer now,” Twain told Rolling Stone in February. “There was a lot of coming to terms with that. It’s been one of the obstacles in my life I’ve just had to learn to live with.”
The Voice’s live playoffs start next Monday, April 17th at 8:00 p.m. ET. Then, contestants who secure a spot in the Top 12 will have the chance to work with Twain in the next phase of the competition, which begins Monday, April 24th.
