Hear Rascal Flatts’ Take on Carrie Underwood’s ‘I Know You Won’t’
On their 10th album, Back to Us, out May 19th, Rascal Flatts put their spin on a Carrie Underwood deep cut off her decade-old Carnival Ride album. “I Know You Won’t” is a piano-driven tune laced in the bitterness and disappointment that comes with realizing that a promise made doesn’t always mean a promise kept. As the song’s lush arrangement builds to a dramatic conclusion, lead singer Gary LeVox injects the swirling tune with vocal runs that would no doubt have impressed Underwood’s American Idol judges back in the day. Listen to the group’s version above.
For LeVox and bandmates Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney, Back to Us is a collection that finds the group taking stock of their musical past while keeping their gaze fixed on the future.
“I think it happens with every career when you’ve been around 10 or 12 years,” DeMarcus tells Rolling Stone Country. “You start to get on cruise control a little bit, then you freak out and go, ‘Oh my gosh, we’ve got to change some things up.’ Then you go too far one way, and you have to take a deep breath and say, ‘Wait a minute, people fell in love with us for distinct reasons. Let’s get back to what it was people loved about us at first.'”
Back to Us also features “Vandalized,” penned by Chris Stapleton and Luke Laird, and a guest shot from Lauren Alaina on the breakup ballad “Are You Happy Now.” The group’s first single from the LP, “Yours If You Want It,” is nearing the Top Ten at country radio. Back to Us will also be released in a deluxe 13-track version, also available May 19th.
