Watch Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee Skewer Trump After Comey Firing
Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee and James Corden all dug into President Donald Trump‘s sudden and shocking decision to fire FBI Director James Comey on their respective shows Wednesday night.
Colbert broke down the firing succinctly on The Late Show. “Now while it looks like Donald Trump fired James Comey to stop the Russia investigation – that is why,” Colbert quipped. “Because, one thing we’ve learned from the last two years of Donald Trump is that what it seems like he’s doing is exactly what he’s doing. There’s no grand strategy … He’s not some wizard playing three-dimensional chess. He’s playing Hungry Hungry Hippos!”
Colbert’s monologue further dissected Comey’s unceremonious termination. He busted out his Nixon impression for the Watergate comparisons and shared a hilarious sequence in which he injected extra contemptuousness into Anderson Cooper’s eye roll at Kellyanne Conway’s defense of the Comey firing.
On Full Frontal, Samantha Bee delved into what she referred to as the latest “slow-motion cluster-fuck of impulsiveness and ineptitude that this White House is famous for.” The host cracked about Press Secretary Sean Spicer literally hiding in the bushes to avoid reporters, the cable news melee and Henry Kissinger’s surreal appearance in the Oval Office the day after Comey’s dismissal.
Bee also went in on the Trump administration’s surprise at the outrage that followed Comey’s firing. The administration reportedly believed both Republicans and Democrats would applaud the decision, since both were unhappy with the former FBI Director, though as Bee pointed out: “I don’t like James Comey. Nobody does. You either think he lost Hillary Clinton the election or you think he’s the reason she’s not locked up. Comey’s a bit of a turd. But at least he’s an independent turd.”
Lastly on The Late Late Show, James Corden offered a little bit of sympathy for the embattled President. “I’m worried this puts Trump in a real bind,” he joked. “He doesn’t have enough kids to fill the vacancy.”
