Hear Miranda Lambert Talk ‘Running Wild’ in Nashville in New Interview
Radio hasn’t been overly enthusiastic about Miranda Lambert‘s latest batch of singles, with “Vice” stalling at Number 11 on the Country Airplay chart and the quirky “We Should Be Friends” being hastily abandoned in favor of “Tin Man,” which just broke the Top 40. Nevertheless, Lambert turned up in the hot seat on country DJ Bobby Bones‘ morning show in Nashville to talk about the thought she’s put into promoting The Weight of These Wings, as well as answer a few WTF questions about Starbucks’ new Unicorn Frappucino from the host.
Lambert did virtually no traditional press around the album, which was released in November and won the ACM Album of the Year honor earlier in April. It was on the ACM Awards broadcast that she played “Tin Man” as a solo acoustic number, notching one of the night’s standout moments. Bones inquired about that performance choice, which mirrors the way she does “Tin Man” during her own shows.
“I’ve only had a single and a quarter of a single,” replied Lambert, revealing that she had originally planned to sing “We Should Be Friends” during the ACM telecast. “I’ve got 22 other songs that need to be showcased.”
She did her best around the album’s release, mixing up her song choices as she made the late night rounds. Her single at the time, “Vice,” was performed first on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, followed by an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers where she sang “We Should Be Friends.” Two weeks later, she appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, performing “Highway Vagabond” – so far not an official single.
Bones later points out that Lambert is something of a Nashville outsider, having only recently made the city her home base. Previously she lived in Texas and then Oklahoma during her marriage to Blake Shelton. She’s slowly adjusted to her new city, trying to not let her celebrity deter her from enjoying all it has to offer.
“When I first got here I was running wild in Midtown, but then I calmed down,” she says.
She even offers a theory about why no one ever tries to approach her in public. “I kind of have this, what do you call it, R-B-F?” she says, to which Bones replies,”Resting blank face.” “I don’t mean to, though. I just do my thing and drink Miller Lite and hang out with my friends.”
Lambert’s headlining Highway Vagabond Tour wrapped up in March, but she’ll get top billing on the festival circuit this summer, including appearances at Bayou Country Superfest on May 27th, Faster Horses in New York on July 22nd and a pair of shows with Wade Bowen and Randy Rogers at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre in August.
